Health Tip of the Week: Plant a Garden

I commented recently on our Facebook page about the backbreaking work of picking beans and lettuce from our backyard garden. But the fresh veggies we get are certainly worth it, especially as I watched my eight year old eat the raw beans right out of the colander. And the lettuce truly was the sweetest I’ve tasted, even better than my local farmer’s market.

The Healing Power of the Written Word

Since today is Global Forgiveness Day, it seems fitting to reflect on the healing power of words. The words “I’m sorry” and “I was wrong” (both of which my husband says I need to practice saying more often) are so powerful, as are “I love you,” “I’m here for you” or “I can help.”

Health Tip of the Week: Don’t Be A Couch Potato

I am a pretty avid TV-hater, a fact which my kids know all too well, and I see the detriment of America reflected in the screens of video games, televisions and Xbox 360’s everywhere. An exaggeration, of course, but now especially with summer and more down time, I remain determined to keep my children outside and active and not glued to the electronic babysitter. They only finished school last week so we are still figuring out the rules of engagement for summer fun, but they’ve heard me say often enough how “screens rot your brain” so they know the more relaxed summer months do not necessarily equal more time in front of the tube.

I just saw a blog post about who you shouldn’t be friends with on Facebook – the friends who only come online to complain, the ones who describe their bodily functions in way too much detail or the ones who make you feel guilty about not commenting on their every thought.

You Can’t Take It With You

We’ve all heard about deathbed regrets, the “If only I could do it over again…” or “If only I had more time” conversations, usually revolving around working less, enjoying family and friends more and not focusing so much on the material things in life. We are all guilty of losing sight of this at times when we get caught up in making a living, getting to whatever the next level of achievement is rather than stopping and smelling the roses and placing importance on “stuff” that, in hindsight, is not really so important.
