I’m really excited to tell you all about a great new job opportunity I have with an organization that represents omega 3 manufacturers. Omega 3’s, as all you health-minded parents know, are the reason you should eat salmon and sprinkle flax seeds on your salad. They’re also one of my favorite categories in the industry and I’m thrilled to have the chance to be more active with companies in this segment of the natural products business.

You know the drill — coffee in the a.m., another once you get to work, an energy drink or soda in the afternoon for a little pick-me-up, then a night of tossing and turning because you’ve been over-caffeinated and can’t sleep. And of course as a parent, sleep aids are not an option: you need to hear the baby crying or be coherent if your five-year-old comes in your room after a nightmare.

Ever wonder how a company like Xigo decides on the products we manufacture? Well, there’s actually a lot that goes into our product development process. We recently interviewed our national educator Buddy Ojeda, C.N. (he’s the one that teaches store employees, and customers, about our products) and he talked a bit about how it all works. The key is “quality ingredients backed by science at specific dosages for specific conditions” but click here to check out the interview; you’ll find that “science” and “safety” are also two key parts of our decision-making process.

For those of you who love Indian food, you’re probably already familiar with curry, the traditional Indian dish with many delicious variations. You may also have heard of turmeric, the yellow spice traditionally included in Indian cooking. What you may not know is that curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, is more than just a key flavor in this Indian specialty. It also has a whole range of healing properties and Xigo has included that ingredient in our new Daytime Restore energy product.

Since I wrote last week about our new Nighttime Repose all-natural sleep product, I thought I should also share with you some of the health issues that are related to a lack of quality and quantity of sleep. According to a study published in Sleep (12/1/2010), having problems falling asleep may mean that you’re headed toward metabolic syndrome, a combination of physical symptoms that raise the risk of diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
In the study, investigators monitored 812 adults ages 45 to 74 for three years to assess the relationship between sleeping problems and the risk of metabolic syndrome, which has symptoms including excess abdominal fat, high triglycerides, low HDL (the “good” cholesterol), high blood pressure and high blood sugar. The researchers reported that loud snoring was associated with the development of high blood sugar and low HDL in particular, but noted that other sleeping problems were only generally predictive of metabolic syndrome.
And click here to see what experts have to say about the more risks associated with poor sleeping habits.
